Yoga at Millenium Park

The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs is offering Free Yoga at Millenium Park every Saturday, June 5 – September 11, 2010. Workouts at Millenium Park take place on The Great Lawn and are free to the public. The normal calendar includes Yoga, Pilates and Dance – with Tai Chi and Kids Workouts scattered throughout the summer.

Begin your weekend with a workout led by a Chicago-area dance company, or take classes in Yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi, with the instructors from the Lakeshore Athletic Club. Workouts are presented by Millennium Park, McDonald’s Corporation and the Mayor’s Fitness Council, and take place on the Great Lawn of the Pritzker Pavilion.

Wrigley Field Ice Skating

The City of Chicago is currently installing a temporary Ice Rink outside Wrigley Field, which will allow local residents to take part in Wrigley Field Ice Skating. The Ice Skating rink at Wrigley Field will cost $300,000 and will be sponsored by the Chicago Park District, The Chicago Blackhawks and several private donors.

Mon – Thurs, 2pm-9pm

Wrigley Field Ice Skating Cost/Fees:
$10 – Adult Entry

$10 – Skate Rental

Since last year’s Hockey Game at Wrigley Field, the public has fallen in love with the idea of Ice Skating at Wrigley Field. Residents had the opportunity to ice skate at Wrigley Field last year after the hockey game, but that only lasted for a short time.

Having Ice Skating at Wrigley Field will be a great opportunity for members of the community to get out and soak in the winter fun with their friends and family. Watch for more updates about Wrigley Field Ice Skating.

The Ice Rink at Wrigley Field will be open December 15, 2009 – February 28, 2010.

Hockey Game at Wrigley Field

The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced plans to play a hockey game at Wrigley Field. The NHL’s second annual Winter Classic is scheduled for January 1, 2009 at Noon Central Time. The 2009 Winter Classic will pit the Chicago Blackhawks against the Detroit Red Wings, wearing vintage 1954-55 jerseys. The 2009 Winter Classic is part of the regular NHL season and will mark the first hockey game at Wrigley Field – a huge event for Chicago and the sporting world. The game will be broadcast on NBC (U.S.) and CBC / RDS (Canada).

No information has been released by the NHL with regard to single-game tickets at this time. The only way to currently guarantee a spot at the Winter Classic is to be a Blackhawks sesason ticket holder.

The 2008 Winter Classic was held in Orchard Park, NY at Ralph Wilson Stadium. An NHL record crowd of 71,217 fans saw the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Buffalo Sabers 2-1 in a shootout. Since Wrigley Field has about half the seating capacity of Ralph Wilson Stadium (41,118 and 73,967 respectively), I would expect the hockey game at Wrigley Field to be a smaller attendance than the inaugural Winter Classic, but Wrigley Field should provide a much more intimate atmosphere.

The NHL Winter Classic 2009 will be the second regular-season outdoor NHL game played in the United States (the Buffalo Sabres hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins at Ralph Wilson Stadium last New Year’s Day) and the third regular-season outdoor game in League history (the Edmonton Oilers hosted the Montreal Canadiens at Commonwealth Stadium Nov. 22, 2003).blockquote>

Chicago Roller Derby All-Stars

The Chicago Roller Derby has crowned the undefeated Hell’s Belles as their 2008 season champions, but the action rolls on. Beginning Saturday July 12, The Chicago Roller Derby has lined up All-Star events featuring the best Rollergirls from Chicago competing against Roller Derby teams from around the country.

The Chicago Roller Derby is comprised of 4 all-female teams from Chicago. The teams play each other on a rotating basis and there is a combined squad that plays teams from other cities. The Chicago Roller Derby Stadium is located at 1909 South Laramie in Cicero (map). On Derby Day, doors at 6pm and the action starts at 7pm. Tickets are $15 Advance tickets, $20 at Door.

Tickets for the Chicago Roller Derby are sold at several locations across Chicago, but tickets for the All-Star Games do not yet appear to be available. Check the official Windy City Rollers website for updated ticket information.

AVP at North Avenue Beach

Pro Volleyball rolls into Chicago with The AVP at North Avenue Beach the weekend of July 10-13, 2008. The 2008 AVP Crocs Slam McDonalds Chicago Beach Volleyball Open will offer 4 days of mens and women’s volleyball competition. You can witness professional volleyball at the AVP Free Thursday event or General Admission (fri-sun) for one day is $20. Different ticket packages are available at the official AVP at North Avenue Beach page.

Heres are some general Pro Volleyball rules:

Each match will be a best of three rally-scoring sets.
The first two sets are played to 21 points.
The third set is played to 15 points.
Teams must have a two-point advantage to win a set and there will be no caps used.
Time between sets will be one (1) minute.
If a server’s ball hits the net and falls into the receiving team’s space, the ball is in play.

Chicago’s Olympic Bid

The Chicago Olympic Bid took a large step forward when Chicago was named as one of four finalists in the competition to host the 2016 Olympic Games. I attended the rally held in Daley Plaza last Friday and it was fun to see the excitement around the event – both because of the Olympic Bid and because of Barack Obama’s appearance.

The Chicago Olympic Bid centers around the construction of a temporary stadium in Washington Park, which is located off of the Garfield Blvd Green Line Station. There has already been some controversy around this venue, as many people expect that the low-income residents whom live in the area will become victims of gentrification. I recently took the opportunity to visit Washington Park and take part in a Locative Storytelling tour, which offered audio commentary from many area residents about the possible impact of the Olympic Games.

While the Chicago Olympic Bid will continue to bring about many tough questions about money, land rights, government power and taxpayer rights, it’s my opinion that Chicago would see a great benefit from hosting the 2016 Olympic Games.

Many people want to look at Mayor Daley and judge that he runs Chicago with absolute power. Looking at his record, this is a hard thing to deny. While we might not always like his choices or agree with his tactics, I cannot deny his commitment to The City of Chicago. Yes there is some money floating around, but I tend to believe that his actions are targeted and building Chicago into a great and prosperous city.

The Olympic Host City will be named in October 2009 and if Chicago is chosen, we will see an era of growth and development that is unrivaled in our city’s history. The economic growth that would result from the eight years of preparation leading up to the Olympic Games would be explosive. Expansion of our transit system, improved city services, new and improved public facilities all over the city – these are just a few of the promises held by the Olympics.

Chicago is an Olympic Finalist

Olympics.org – The International Olympic Committee announced today that Chicago (USA), Tokyo (Japan), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and Madrid (Spain) have made it on to the shortlist of cities bidding to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Candidate Cities were accepted unanimously from seven Applicant Cities, which also included Prague (Czech Republic), Baku (Azerbaijan) and Doha (Qatar).

“All the bids were of a very high standard,” said IOC President Jacques Rogge.”It is a tribute to the health of the Olympic Movement that the field was so strong. I congratulate the Candidate Cities and I hope that those cities which were unsuccessful this time have benefited from the process.”

The candidate cities now advance to a 16-month campaign that will end on Oct. 2, 2009, with a secret ballot by International Olympic Committee.

Olympic Candidate City

Today in Athens, Greece, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) selected Chicago as a finalist city in its bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Chicago is now officially a Candidate City and enters the international phase of the bid process. A special event is planned on Friday, June 6, at 11:30 AM in Daley Plaza.

This is a significant milestone for Chicago 2016 on a road that began in 2006. The United States Olympic Committee selected Chicago as the U.S. bid city in April 2007, and the bid submitted its Applicant File—an overview of its plan for the Games—in January of this year. The IOC will select a Host City on October 2, 2009, in Copenhagen.

2008 Chicago Marathon

The 2008 Chicago Marathon will take place on Sunday, October 12. The Chicago Marathon will begin and end in Grant Park, with a start time of 8:00am. Runners are allowed 6.5 hours to finish the race. 2008 will mark the 31st consecutive running of The Chicago Marathon. Registration is currently available through marathon charity sponsors.

The Chicago Marathon is known for having a mostly flat and fast course, which has allowed for many world and personal records to be set since the first Chicago Marathon in 1977. The out-and-in marathon course allows for spectators to track their favorite runner at many different spots throughout the course, without needing to travel long distances, giving the Chicago Marathon a unique spectator experience. Chicago Marathon

The Bank of America’s Chicago Marathon is a major marathon held yearly in Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Alongside the Boston, New York, London and Berlin Marathons, it is one of the five World Marathon Majors. The October 7, 2007 running was the 30th Anniversary running of the race. It has been run every year since the September 25, 1977 running of the first race under the original name the Mayor Daley Marathon drew a field of 4200 runners.
