New Year Polar Bear Swim

On New Years Day, January 1st 2008, you can take part in the Chicago Polar Bear Club’s 9th Annual New Year Polar Bear Swim. The New Year Polar Bear Swim takes place at Noon at North Avenue Beach, near the boat house (aprox 1600 North). There is no need to signup, just show up at the beach with your swimsuit and blanket.
A Polar Bear Swim is basically where you take (most of) your clothes off, run into the icy water of Lake Michigan for a moment, and then run back out onto shore. I’ve seen some more intense Polar Bear Swims in other places, but this New Year Polar Bear Swim is a family event. For more information about the New Year Polar Bear Swim, check out the Chicago Polar Bear Club website.
Meet for the New Year Polar Bear Swim at North Avenue Beach near the north end of the beach house just prior to Noon for pictures. Wear your swimsuit under your warm clothing. We’ll all disrobe together and take group pictures in swimsuits before going in the water. Then we’ll run in together, get wet, run back out and get dressed quickly. You’ll be really cold for about 5 minutes total, probably spending less than 30 seconds actually in the water, unless you want more. Spectators are always welcome.
