Chicago Taxi Gas Surcharge

Chicago Taxi Gas Surcharge
Beginning on April 28, The City of Chicago approved a Taxi Gas Surcharge to help taxi drivers cover the rising cost of fuel. The gas surcharge adds $1.00 to your taxi ride whenever gas prices in Chicago have been above $3.20 / gal for more than one week. This chart on Chicago Gas Prices shows that we have not been below $3.20 / gal since early March.

I think the Taxi Gas Surcharge is fair, but it’s just another example of how everyone is starting to feel the financial squeeze. As fuel prices continue to rise and summer rolls along, there are many alternative transportation options. The CTA Rail and Bus routes continue to serve Chicago, and with the warm weather you have the option of riding your bike more often. Don’t forget to take advantage of the free bike valet at many of Chicago’s biggest summer events.
