Chicago Hash House Anthrax Scare
The 6th Annual Chicago Hash House Anthrax Scare and Santa Run will take place on Saturday, December 15, 2007. The run is 4 miles and you will receive a Santa Hat and Hazmat Suit. Arrive by 2pm and the run starts at 2:30pm at Hidden Shamrock Club - 2723 N. Halsted. The entry fee for the Antrhax Scare and Santa Run is $30. You can check out the official page for a clutter of information.

The History behind the Annual Anthrax Scare is in recognition of some Hashers that got arrested because their chalk markings were mistaken for Anthrax. I haven’t been able to pinpoint the exact history, when or where the original anthrax scare was, but this blog seems to link to several different instances and I found this post about a 1999 anthrax scare in Wichita.

The Chicago Hash House is a club that organizes Hash Runs - a run that has a trail that is designed by one of the members. Here’s some info from their website:

When the running club known as the Chicago Hash House Harriers converges in a different part of Chicago or the suburbs each week, they are looking for more than a workout. The runners (”Hashers” in club parlance) are looking for a trail. The trail is no jogging trail. This is not a race. There may be no particular destination–the fun is in following the trail. The activity is based on the pattern of hounds chasing a hare. The hare scouts out the area in advance and marks a trail using dots of flour, chalk arrows, or toilet paper.

The run becomes interesting because the hares throw the runners off using false trails. The false trails enable the slower runners to catch up and catch their breath, keeping the pack together as a group. After about an hour of running through fields, swamps, alleys, streets, and other terrain, the Hashers end up at a local pub or home to socialize and go through the rituals associated with “The ON-ON.”
